On My Way to the Vernal Pond - CA Tiger Salamander
On My Way to the Vernal Pond - CA Tiger Salamander
This painting was part of the show "Expressions: Happy Trails Community Sanctuary" which features the land, plants and animals dependent on its preservation. The land is currently slated for a mega-development that would destroy 550 acres of animal habitat. The purpose of the show is give the animals a voice and to continue to raise awareness of the importance of saving this land from such an ill-conceived proposal.
This painting is inspired by photos by Bruce Delgado and Frank Schleicher. The spot markings are those of a CA Tiger Salamander found by Bruce on the Fort Ord area lands. I created the still life of oak leaves and acorns and twigs. The CA Tiger Salamander is an endangered species. It lives one quarter of its life underground.
Bruce Delgado is a botanist and mayor of Marina, CA.
UPDATE: The development was cancelled December 1, 2016 as the developer was not willing to sign indemnification papers for the project.
